*gasp* Is this is a post? Yes, yes it is. If you remember my last post, I said “So this brings up the question: what’s going to happen to the PTFP? I don’t know. I’m never going to delete it, but I’m not sure if I’ll post again. I could post a week from now if I felt like it, or this could be it. It depends.”
Well, it’s a Monday. Toy Story 4 is out (with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes rating). I love art. I still love Poptropica in its own way. So I decided: why not make a post if I’ll have fun? So we’re bringing out the ol’ Toy Story mashed with Poptropica! I could edit this to the extreme like I used to, but I think that’s part of what made me tired of posting. I want to be genuine, to be me. So there might be mistakes or awkward wording, but the point is to have fun! Let’s get to it!
Toy Story and Poptropica’s History
Oddly enough, there have been lots of Toy Story ads on Poptropica, but not much documentation. Apparently, in 2010 there was a Toy Story/Toy Story 2 DVD ad, but I can only find this Answers.com question and this YouTube video as evidence (thanks to the person who recorded this, who is 9 years older now, which is weird to think about):
The ad consisted of a crane machine game, and the prizes were a Toy Alien costume, a Buzz Lightyear costume, and an army men effect card. According to the Answers.com response, there was a “Jenny” costume as well, but that’s not a Toy Story character, so perhaps they meant Jessie. Who knows.
Now, also in 2010, there was also a Toy Story 3 ad, which did release that year in theaters. This time, there’s better documentation, but still only one post describing it that I can find on Icy Comet’s Blog (wow, that brings back memories!). The costumes, with credit to the post and blog of course, looked like this:
Honestly, these are really cool and detailed, and I kind of wish they had stuck around. They didn’t get the appreciation they deserved. Now, to present day. 9 years after Toy Story 3’s release, Toy Story 4 is here. I saw it today, and it was pretty good, even for older audiences. To the point, though, there’s been two new Poptropica ads. As documented by the Poptropica Help Blog on this post and this one, Poptropica has shown trailers of the movie with a Buzz Wings Power card and Forky Follower card:
They’re cool and all, and I do love Forky, but those Toy Story 3 costumes just take the cake. Anyway, I just found this pretty fun to research, and I would love any more tidbits of information in the comments. It’s cool to see how long Poptropica has kept up this relationship with Toy Story.
Art
I could only find a couple art mashups for Toy Story, but that’s okay because the ones I did find are really neat! The first piece is by Mileymouse101 on deviantArt, named “Poptropica Toy Story Trilogy.” It features Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and an alien toy in a classic Poptropica art style. Make sure to check them out!
The second art piece is a Roblox character t-shirt that Spongebob1129 made with Woody and Buzz Lightyear costumes from Poptropica. So we have three mashups in this one! Editing digitally isn’t the easiest thing to do, so I have to give props for the dedication here, especially since we established that these costumes came out in 2010! I do have a few… questions, though. How did they find this Buzz Lightyear costume photo? Did they take it themselves? Is it on a blog lost in the sea of the Internet? Well, in the middle of asking these questions, I did find the answer. It turns out the magic keywords were “Buzz Lightyear Poptropica” in Google. Good going, SW.
Costumes
So almost all of these costumes were released by Poptropica themselves in the advertisements described above, but these have a little more background and are better quality photos. Plus, they’re not literally recorded history like the ones described previously. The Poptropica Help Blog found Nate Greenwall’s portfolio on Poptropica in this post, which includes his Toy Story costume creations! Woody, Jessie, the alien toy, and Buzz Lightyear are all here in their full glory. Make sure to go check it out to see his other Poptropica art.
In a long shot, I also looked up “Bo Peep Poptropica” on Google because, well, I love Bo Peep in this new movie. And guess what? I’M-JACOB1 created a customizable Avatar Studio Gift (ASG) just last month, as recorded in the Poptropica Help Blog’s page. If you want to wear this costume, make sure to follow the instructions on the PHB. To save you some time scrolling through photos, though, the username is Bo_Peep_ToyStory4_ASG .
As a side note, I noticed Nate Greenwall’s Poptropica portfolio changed locations from the above post and discovered the Toy Story 3 ad art in its original condition on his new website. It’s beautiful and I feel like maybe my curiosity has been satiated for now. Did I dig too deep for this post? Probably. But I also know there’s probably a bunch I missed, too. I don’t want to post the art here just because I don’t want to take away anything from his website, but feel free to look at it in the link above.
So there we go. I spent way longer on this than I planned, but it was honestly fun and interesting. If you have any more info on Toy Story mashups, make sure to comment below for everyone to see! I tried my best, but hey, I’m human and I’m sure there are things I missed. I hope you enjoyed reading about it as much as I did!
