April 2015, and MotM Interview

What’s up, Poptropicans?

First off, I wanted to mention the very funny joke the Creators played on us:

Available on both 3½” and 5¼” floppy disc, Poptropica: The Text Adventure is compatible with all leading desktop computer platforms, including Commodore 64, TRS-80, and Apple IIe. Coming soon!

Poptropica: The Text Adventure was just some white words on a black background:

And for those of you who don’t know what a floppy disk looks like (or is), here you go: (I actually had to ask my dad for help on this, as I had no idea what it is either 😀 )

As far as I can understand, a floppy disk was something you would insert into your computer, run the program, and the words would show up on the screen ( I may be wrong though 🙂 )

Aside from that, over on the Creator’s Blog, we got an interview with the Mystery of the Map illustrator, Kory Merrit!

Captain Crawfish: How did you get involved in illustrating Mystery of the Map?

Kory Merritt: The Poptropica Creators originally hired me to illustrate the Poptropica comic strip. After a little while they asked me to try some graphic novel page samples, which led to me working on “Mystery of the Map” with author Max “Galactic Hot Dogs” Brallier.

CC: What are the challenges of adapting Poptropica’s art style from an online game to a graphic novel? What are the joys?

KM: Poptropica has a very distinct style. I’m actually an art teacher by day and didn’t have much freelance experience, so working for Poptropica was the first time I had to draw someone else’s characters. It took a little while to get the hang of it – the Poptropica design might seem simple at times, but there are little details that can make or break the characters. Fortunately, the Poptropica Creators were very patient and helped guide me along. I’m pretty happy with the results, for I think the illustrations resemble the standard Poptropican model, but at the same time have a hand-drawn, comic-type feel.

CC: What’s your process for illustrating the book?

KM: I’m old-fashioned enough to still use pen and paper for the most part, but for “Mystery of the Map” I also used digital color and made corrections in Photoshop.

CC: Who’s your favorite MotM character to draw?

KM: The Vikings! It’s fun to draw angry faces.

CC: What other projects have you worked on that Poptropicans might like to know about?

KM: I draw some of my own stories, mostly just for fun. One of them is on FunBrain, and some are on GoComics.com. It seems I will also have my own illustrated book coming out later this year, published by Andrews McMeel.

Now many of you have seen my theory on the possibly upcoming Mystery of the Map Island(since it is sticky 😛 ), but here is a little more evidence that I found 😀 (thanks to the PHB for some of this!)

  • If you type mysteryofthemapisland.com, it will direct to Poptropica!
  • Daily Pops are blasting with MotM pictures! Look at them below (be prepared for a “Viking’s Grotto” common room!)

I’ll probably go into more detail about the images once the island is confirmed.

I can’t wait for MotM, but that’s my personal opinion 😀 What are you guys thinking? Put it in the comments!

Trusty Biker

P.S. Wolfy- I totally fell for that joke about you leaving 😀 Don’t ever do that again! 😛

Yesh, it’s finally summer!

Hilo, everyone! This is Tough Spider! I know I haven’t posted in a while, and I know I haven’t worked on PopU in a while, and I know that nowadays I’m starting my posts like this every time I post. But now that school’s out for summer, hopefully I’ll be more active. The thing is, I’m going out of town next weekend, and I have no idea if there will be wifi or not.

Anyway, the creators have put another costume in the store! This one’s a fishing suit in honor of Episode 2 of Survival Island.

FishingSuit

Why they didn’t put this in earlier I really don’t know. Oh well. 😛

Somehow, we missed posting about one CYODIC runner-up! Laura S. of Virginia submitted “Stormchaser Island,” where “your poptropican travels alongside one of Poptropica’s most famous meteorologists and tracks a dangerous series of storms.”

Blue Horse

And lastly, we’re so close to 100,000 views! The fact that we’ll probably be getting 100,000 views a bit after our 1 1/2 birthday (which was last Tuesday, by the way) is absolutely incredible. I’ll try to convince SW to throw a party sometime soon because of it. 😛

But that little widget in the side bar is right. The whole reason we have 96,824 hits at the time of this post is because of you guys. We wouldn’t be anywhere without you guys. I know it sounds really cheesy, but it’s because of you guys that we are the first thing that comes up on Google when you search “Poptropica Tips.” And get this: we are above the official Poptropica Tricks and Tips app!

sucess!

So thank you, all of you! Let’s keep making this blog rock!

FINALS!

Hilo everyone, I’m taking a break from studying for finals to tell you guys about the finalists of CYODIC! (See what I did there? xD)

The finalists are here!

Your part of the Create Your Dream Island contest may be over, but ours is just beginning! From thousands of entries, we’ve narrowed it down to 50 finalists. One of these 50 will be selected as the one grand prize winner whose Island will become reality.

We’ve looked at a few already, and we’ve got to tell you, this is going to be one tough decision! There are too many great ideas. The creativity and talent of Poptropicans is just incredible.

Hopefully we’ll be able to make up our minds soon!

Hmm… I wonder whose entry that is on top. It’s not mine, I didn’t enter. Is it any of you guys’? I can’t wait to find out who won!

IT’S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!!

I love that song. Anyway…

Don’t miss your chance to help create a Poptropica Island!

Sure, it’s a hectic time right now. There’s a new Island coming out, we’re in the midst of all the holiday hustle and bustle, interns are getting fired left and right — but don’t let one very important thing get away from you. There is only about a week left for you to submit your entry in the “Create Your Dream Island” contest!

One lucky winner will have their Island idea turned into a reality in 2014. Entries must be postmarked by December 24 — that’s a week from tomorrow! — and received by December 31 — that’s two weeks from tomorrow! — in order to be eligible.

We know you’re busy, but if you’re sitting on a winning idea we would hate to miss out. Remember, you can get an official entry form inside your copy of the Island Creator Kit, or download one for free from our friends at Penguin.

There’s still time for you to make your dream Island into a reality, but not for long!

Time has really flown by! When they were first announcing CYODIC, the deadline seemed YEARS away. Now it’s due in less than a week!

If you want to send in an idea and haven’t done it yet, you better get crackin’!

BLACK WIDOW

Looks like the Sale ends today! Sadly, I won’t be ordering one with my Teenage Daughter of Hades account… The Electrify doesn’t show up on the shirt, which stinks more since that is not a glitch, and actually a Poptropica Item 😦 Also:
